Set up your family site

Publishing a private family tree with Atto means: a redacted copy goes up on your own Cloudflare Pages site, and only the email addresses you invite can sign in. You do this from the Share screen in the desktop kit — no need to read Cloudflare’s Zero Trust docs.

What you need

  1. A free Cloudflare account.
  2. A site name — Atto fills in atto-<your-project> for you; you can change it.
  3. A Cloudflare API token, or wrangler login in a terminal. Atto tests this for you with Check.
  4. The email addresses you want to allow — family members sign in with a one-time code.
  5. A preview first, so you see exactly what will go online.

The steps in the Share screen

  1. Open Share in Atto and pick the project that holds your tree.
  2. Read the Setup status row: Cloudflare account, Site name, Access & login, and Ready to publish. Fix whatever is marked not ready.
  3. Build & open tree to preview the redacted tree on this computer.
  4. Add the email addresses of the people you want to invite, then Turn on login. This puts the sign-in in front of your site.
  5. Check first — Atto confirms the upload would work without uploading anything yet.
  6. Publish. The final link is on .pages.dev and opens to the family tree behind the login you set up.

Full Social Security numbers never go on the site — Atto keeps only the last four digits where needed, and the redaction happens on your computer before anything is uploaded.

How the login works

Atto uses Cloudflare Access: your site is not public. Each invited email receives a one-time code when they visit the link, and only those emails get through. If you remove an email and turn on login again, that person loses access on their next visit (or within about 24 hours).

There is an escape hatch labelled Publish without login… — use it only if you understand the site will be public until login is on. The normal family flow keeps the gate on.

If something says “not ready”

  • Cloudflare account not ready — add an API token, or run wrangler login in a terminal, then use Check.
  • Access & login not ready — add at least one invite email, then use Turn on login.
  • Site name not ready — make sure the project is picked; Atto fills in atto-<project>.
