Italian civil registration is a set of books, not one national series. The Stato Civile Napoleonico opens in 1809 across much of the mainland South. The Borbonico continues the Two Sicilies, and Sicily’s own civil series starts in 1820. Tuscany kept the Granducale. The north before unification is the Sabaudo. The Stato Civile Italiano takes over in 1866 in the North, in 1871 in Veneto and Lazio, and in 1924 in Trentino and Trieste. Before those years, the Catholic Quinque Libri — baptism, marriage, death, and the status animarum — are the record. The same person can carry two spellings and two dates across those books.
